Did you know that oyster reefs once thrived in Hong Kong ? protecting us from storm surges and rising seas, cleaning pollutants from our waters, sheltering fish and other ocean animals, and sustaining our local 700-year-old oyster farming heritage.
But decades of pollution, commercial dredging, coastal reclamation and over-harvesting have destroyed our local reefs, along with the long list of benefits they provide.
85% of oyster reefs have already been lost, making them the most endangered marine habitat in the world!
For Hong Kong's wounded reefs to get the urgent attention and help they need, we need to gather as many signatures as possible. Will you please sign the petition now?
Each Hong Kong oyster is one of Nature’s tiny miracles, filtering a bathtub’s worth of water every day to help clean our local waters! And as they bond together in reefs, they provide habitat for local marine life and shelter our coasts from rising seas and storm surges.
Because oyster reefs are so vitally important, TNC is urgently working to rescue and rebuild them… Before we lose them for good. We’re restoring oyster reefs in Pak Nai, Tolo Harbour, Lau Fau Shan and Lantau Island… But we need to rebuild more—and fast—before it’s too late!
