The oyster reefs that once covered Hong Kong waters are almost gone. Will you add your voice to call for Hong Kong’s oyster reefs to receive the protection they need?
Oyster reefs
Without formal protection, oyster reefs in Hong Kong are highly vulnerable to threats such as pollution, development, and reclamation. The limited public awareness of their ecological importance has resulted in insufficient support for their conservation.
Establish multiple oyster reef restoration sites, including Pak Nai, Tolo Harbour, Lau Fau Shan, and Lantau Island
Include oyster reef protection in next Hong Kong Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (BSAP)
Save Our Shell program: Recycle discarded shells as substrate for new reefs
Support Hong Kong's oyster reefs listing as "Endangered ocean habitat" on IUCN Red List
85% of oyster reefs have already been lost, making them the most endangered marine habitat in the world! Despite this critical status, they are not formally recognized as endangered or protected marine habitat in Hong Kong, meaning they lack the protection they desperately need.
We are launching this petition — to advocate for their formal protection and ensure that these vital habitats receive the urgent attention they need.
It’s not too late to save them, but we need people like YOU to call for Hong Kong’s oyster reefs to receive the protection they need!
Your voice is crucial — when more people speak up, it clearly demonstrates public demand for the protection of oyster reefs. This support empowers us to move forward with our initiatives—including getting more hotels and restaurants to recycle their oyster shells into new reefs with us.
