Today, six of the world’s seven species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered due to human activity.
From harming beaches where sea turtles nest and coral reefs where sea turtles feed… To polluting our oceans with plastics and other litter that entrap or poison sea turtles… And from warming, increasingly acidic seas that make it difficult for sea turtles to find food… To illegal hunting and trade of sea turtle shells, meat and eggs… Humans have forced these gentle creatures into a precarious struggle for survival.
TNC is working ‘round the clock to help bring sea turtles back from the brink. Our work includes protecting and restoring nesting beaches and coral reefs, engaging volunteers to protect nesting sites and document illegal poaching activity, tracking some turtles with GPS to learn more about their habits and the most crucial places to protect to save them, and working with the fishing industry to use more sustainable fishing gear to limit by-catch and reef destruction. More broadly, we’re working across many strategies to combat climate change.
